Wholecloth Printed Wool quilt
31502Cc Wholecloth Printed Wool Madders, teal, dark green 1150.00
86” x 90” 1830s, eastern US, maker unknown. Two printed delaine dress fabrics form the front of this piece: the center panel is formed of two 25” wide strips, and an 11” strip, of printed ombre striped delaine of alternating wavy strips, one in delicate madder branches and the other in madder floral sprigs against a teal ombre ground. The center is framed by a 12” band of a brown striped fabric with a narrow longitude stripe framed by short horizontal dark green stripes and alternating with a longitude pattern of small dark green squares with floral figure. The back is a rough even-weave natural wool, and the applied binding is the madder ombre stripe except for a 11” section. Entirely hand pieced and joined, hand quilted in large clamshell design over the entire surface. One small bite through the binding on one edge, otherwise excellent condition.
