75” x 80” plus full fringes on 3 sides; mid-19th century (undated, unidentified weaver), seamless tied beiderwand weave in red wool, natural cotton weft, with a narrow mid-19th century double indigo print cotton applied to the top edge as a binding. Design features birds of paradise feeding their young, 4 birds in the nest; secondary pattern has pineapple, grapes and flora in an urn, bracketed by pairs of birds of paradise beak to beak. The borders feature “Boston”houses and Asian structures, leading to the pattern sometimes being called “Christians and Heathens.” No holes or stains, all fringes complete, excellent condition.
