Bars Chintz Pillar Print
61705Cc Bars Chintz Pillar print & Indigo blue floral 2750.00
94’ x 98” c.1830, central eastern US; maker unknown. Alternating seven inch stripes (+/-) in a red and blue pillar print and an all blue floral. The complete pillar print fabric consisted of a pillar design flanked by baskets tipped either to the right or left. This arrangement has been cut into three long strips of motifs. In the quilt center are 2 pillar print strips, and the remaining strips in this fabric feature the baskets. The red and blue print strips are alternated with indigo print strips, which feature three different florals, including white roses, rose of sharon, morning glories, and white lilacs. The quilt is narrowly bound in another indigo blue print over a natural muslin brown domestic. Entirely by hand; quilted in echo squares with lines about 1” apart; the blue strips are quilted in black or dark blue thread. Minor binding wear, but excellent condition overall.
Extensive research exists about the red and blue basket print; full citations accompany the quilt.
